You might know me through my spy walks in London
, or through my Spies of London podcast
. They have all been building pressure towards this, your No. 1 Cold War Primer!
My three walks covered three key periods in British/Western espionage: the second world war and its build-up, the Cold War, and the modern or post Cold War. These periods are represented nicely by three different areas of London: WW2 Baker Street, Cold War Mayfair and the present day along the banks of the Thames river.
But the walks, even the virtual ones, are still tied to geography. How did the Cambridge Five get started in the 1930s and why? How did the diplomatic fall-out poison our road to WW2? How did the paranoia feed into the Cold War nuclear age? What role did nuclear weapons have in ending the Cold War and maintaining an uneasy peace, if any? How did the Berlin Wall come about and why did it fall?
These are questions that no walk in London could answer. This course brings together my three walks into the same platform for the first time at a great price. But more than that, better than that, I can now tell the full story of the last 100 years of espionage. And yes, we try to be objective. The British don't always get it right. Indeed, some people think we never do!
